BARBARA IMPERIALI CLASS OF 1922 PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY AND PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY AT THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY.

IMPERIALI RECEIVED HER B.SC. IN MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY FROM UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON, UK, AND HER PH.D. IN SYNTHETIC ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, WORKING UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF PROFESSOR SATORU MASAMUNE. FOLLOWING THIS, SHE CARRIED OUT POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES BOTH AT MIT AND IN THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOCHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT AT BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY, WHERE SHE WORKED ON THE DESIGN, SYNTHESIS, AND EVALUATION OF PEPTIDE-BASED FLUOROMETHYL KETONE PROTEASE INHIBITORS WITH PROFESSOR ROBERT ABELES.

IMPERIALI BEGAN HER CAREER AS AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY IN 1986. IN 1989, SHE JOINED THE FACULTY IN THE DIVISION OF CHEMISTRY AND CHEMICAL ENGINEERING AT THE CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, WHERE SHE EARNED THE RANK OF PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY IN 1997. IN 1999, PROFESSOR IMPERIALI RETURNED TO MIT AS THE ELLEN SWALLOW RICHARDS PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY, AND IN 2009 SHE ASSUMED HER CURRENT APPOINTMENT AS THE CLASS OF 1922 PROFESSOR OF BIOLOGY AND PROFESSOR OF CHEMISTRY AT MIT.

THE BOSS IS AN AVID HIKER AND BACKPACKER AND LIKES TO GET "WAY OFF THE GRID" WHEN MIT DOESN'T NEED HER!

CURRENT GROUP

GREG DODGE (GDODGE77@mit.edu)

Greg grew up in the finger lakes region of western New York. He received his BS in Biochemistry from Rochester Institute of Technology. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Biological Chemistry, working under Prof Janet Smith, where he studied structure-function relationships in dehydratase domains from various polyketide synthase pathways.

Greg enjoys camping with his wife and dog (KIWI) outside the lab, building and tinkering with computers, and swimming.

christine arbour. (ARBOUR@MIT.EDU)

Christine completed her B.S. in Chemistry from Eastern Michigan University in 2014. Following undergraduate studies, she pursued a Ph.D. under the supervision of Prof. Jenn Stockdill at Wayne State University. At WSU, she utilized C-terminal N-acyl ureas to access C-terminally modified and macrocyclic peptides.

When she is not in the lab, Christine enjoys traveling, cooking, and trying new restaurants.

Anthony demaria (ademaria@mit.edu)

Anthony completed his Bachelor’s in chemistry from Boston UniversIty. He then returned to Boston University for his PhD, working under the supervision of Prof. Karen Allen, studying and characterizing the activating protein complex of the NF-κB central inflammatory pathway.

He enjoys hiking and traveling, as well as other varied hobbies, usually involving some combination of history, woodworking, and objects with moving parts.

Soumi Ghosh (soumig@mit.edu)

Soumi completed her B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Chemistry from Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, and Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, India, respectively. She joined the lab of Prof. Neil Marsh at the University of Michigan, Department of Chemistry, to pursue her Ph.D. in Chemical Biology, where she worked in probing the mechanism of an anti-viral responsive radical S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM) enzyme, VIPERIN.

Apart from research, Soumi is a passionate dancer with a background in various Indian classical dance forms.

Hugh higinbotham (hughhig@mit.edu

Hugh was born and raised in the greater Seattle area and received a B.S. in physics with minors in math and applied math from the University of Washington. After graduating, he worked for an additional year as a lab technician at the UW Nanopore Lab.

Hugh is a serial hobbyist and most recently enjoys playing guitar and the board game Go. He is pictured here atop a small mountain in New Zealand, smiling through nerves right before a 40 mph gust attempts to return him to sea level.

HAnna DE Jong (Hdejong@mit.edu)

Hanna completed her BSc and MSc in Molecular Life Sciences at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. She continued to pursue her Ph.D. at Utrecht University and joined the departments of Chemical Biology and Drug Discovery and Infection Biology. Her thesis described glycoengineering techniques to install sialic acid on bacterial lipo-oligosaccharides.

Outside the lab, Hanna enjoys traveling, indoor biking, reading, and cooking DElicious vegetarian food.

KYLE PRATT (KPRATT@MIT.EDU)

Kyle is a current MIT undergraduate student. He was born and raised in Jamaica and is majoring in Biological Engineering.

In his free time, he enjoys going to the gym, playing basketball, and playing video games.

Alex Han

Alex is an undergraduate student at MIT planning to major in Computer Science and Molecular Biology. She loves watching movies, listening to music, and playing animal crossing.
